Each Fort Smith single-family home (up to a fourplex) is provided one city-owned trash cart at no cost. Residents are encouraged to use trash bags inside the carts to promote cleanliness.
Carts should be placed at the curb by 7:00 AM on your collection day. Carts must have at least 3 feet of clearance on all sides so the mechanical truck arm can lift the cart. The cart must not be blocked by vehicles, objects, overhanging tree limbs, or power lines.
Do not overfill carts or place items on top, as this may cause debris to spill onto the curb. To request an additional trash cart, please call.
Note: If you are not currently recycling, you may request a recycling cart at no cost. Recycling helps reduce the amount of waste sent to the landfill.
Do not place tires in your trash cart. For disposal, contact the Westark Collection Center, located at 601 Oak Grove Road in Van Buren, AR. They can be reached at 479-652-3705 and are open Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Tires must be off the rim. A $3.00 fee per tire applies.
Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) may be placed in your trash cart. However, if usable product remains in the original container, it is recommended that you take it to the Landfill Convenience Pad for proper disposal. Please refer to the Household Hazardous Waste page for a list of accepted items.
Additional Trash Carts
Residents may obtain additional carts for the following fee:
- Additional carts: $10 per cart, per month
- Recycling carts are available at no cost

Trash Cart Repair or Replacement
If your trash cart is damaged or broken, please contact us to schedule repair or replacement at 479-784-2262 or solidwaste@fortsmithar.gov.
The City will repair or replace carts for minor damage caused by normal use. If a cart is damaged due to abuse or neglect (such as hot ashes or punctures), the customer will be charged replacement costs:
- $70 for a 65-gallon cart
- $90 for a 95-gallon cart
Walkout Service
The City of Fort Smith Department of Solid Waste Services offers a “walk-out” service for elderly or disabled residents who are unable to move their carts to the curb. This service is provided at no additional cost.

Help prevent litter in your neighborhood. Bag or wrap all loose trash material before placing it in your bin. This will also help your bins from getting smelly.
Set Your Bins Out The Night Before
In order to best ensure your trash and recycling will be picked up on the day of collection, pull your bins to the curb the night before.
Separate Recyclables from Trash
There are many day-to-day items that can be recycled rather than thrown away. Place recyclable objects in the recycling bins to help reduce waste quantities.
