Bass Reeves Legacy Loop

What is the Bass Reeve Legacy Loop?

In January 2025, the City of Fort Smith was awarded the Rebuilding America’s Infrastructure for Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) grant from the United States Department of Transportation, securing $24.9 million toward the Bass Reeves Legacy Loop Greenway Initiative. The grant will fund over 9 miles of new active transportation infrastructure facilities that will connect to the City’s existing trail network, eventually creating a 14 mile “loop” of paved shared use paths. When complete, the Bass Reeves Legacy Loop will connect a number of Fort Smith’s landmarks, parks, schools, and neighborhoods. It is estimated that over 20% of Fort Smith residents will live within a half mile of the Bass Reeves Legacy Loop.
