At the City of Fort Smith Solid Waste Services Department, our commitment to responsible waste management extends beyond the materials we collect and dispose of. We believe environmental stewardship also means creating opportunities for wildlife to thrive and recognizing the important role our facility can play within the larger ecosystem. While our primary responsibility is to safely and efficiently manage the community’s waste, we also understand the importance of being thoughtful stewards of the land entrusted to us. Through conservation projects, habitat improvements, and the incorporation of native species, we are working to find a meaningful balance between the essential services we provide and the natural environment around us.

Due to our work, the Solid Waste Services is proud to be recognized by the Arkansas Wildlife Federation and the Wild Ones Foundation for our efforts in establishing native wildflowers and wildlife habitat throughout our facility. 

We are also taking meaningful steps to support species that play an important role in our local ecosystem, including strengthening dragonfly populations and installing numerous bat houses throughout the facility. As natural habitat continues to be lost, providing safe roosting locations for bats is increasingly important to their survival and to maintaining healthy populations. Bats and dragonflies are both highly effective natural predators of mosquitoes and other flying insects, making these projects an important part of our broader commitment to protecting wildlife habitat, supporting biodiversity, and maintaining a healthy ecological balance throughout the landfill.
