Community Development Projects

Consent Decree Projects
The Consent Decree is an agreement between the City of Fort Smith, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the Department of Justice (DOJ) to reduce sanitary sewer overflows (SSOs). The Consent Decree requires the City to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the sanitary sewer system and to develop projects that will address sewer capacity deficiencies. Drainage Improvements

Parks Projects
Recreational spaces such as parks, playgrounds, and sports facilities are undergoing changes to ensure citizens’ safety and enjoyment. Sidewalk Improvements
The Streets and Traffic Control Department works each year to build new sidewalks and repair existing ones, improving safety, accessibility, and connectivity throughout the city. Projects include both citizen requests and planned segments from the Move Fort Smith Active Transportation Plan. Locations are prioritized using a rating system that considers proximity to schools, pedestrian usage, traffic volumes, connectivity to existing sidewalks, and ease of construction.

Streets Projects
Over 500 miles of city streets are maintained by the City of Fort Smith. These streets are evaluated or rated every couple of years for resurfacing. This evaluation considers numerous factors such as longitudinal/surface cracking, weathering, alligator cracking, settlement, rutting, shoving, potholes, and overall ride. Traffic Signal Projects
The Traffic Control Operations program is responsible for maintaining the traffic signals at all 155 signalized intersections within the City and for maintaining all the signage located on City streets.
